The L.A. County Board of Supervisors is advancing a proposal to mandate air conditioning in rental housing due to rising temperatures and extreme heat events. Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Hilda Solis introduced this motion, which passed on a 4-1 vote. The plan aims to set a legal maximum indoor temperature to protect vulnerable populations. Implementation details are still undecided since final votes are still months away. Landlord groups oppose the measure because of cost concerns. Similar requirements exist in Phoenix and Las Vegas, and state lawmakers are exploring related measures.
